ARTiculation at Clare Museum

19 March 2025

Transition Year students from Rice College recently took part in the ARTiculation Ireland competition, which is being held in Clare for the first time, at the Clare Museum on Arthur’s Row, Ennis.

ARTiculation at Clare Museum

Running for ten years now, ARTiculation Ireland is a competition for secondary school students aged 15 to 19 that aims to engage them with art in order to develop their personal observation, research, analysis, and public speaking skills. As part of the competition, organised by Julia Walsh of Tipperary Museum of Hidden History and Claudia Kohler of Kerry County Museum, participating students are offered the chance to deliver a ten-minute presentation before their peers and a wider audience about a work of art, an artefact or a piece of architecture of their choice. Participants go through a series of internal school heats and regional heats across Ireland with the chance of being selected for the national final.

Eoghan McAleer, Dylan McGloin and Kierin Moran of Rice College gave presentations on their chosen topics: Duomo Di Milano; Vincent Van Gogh; The Starry Night; and Contemporary Art, respectively. Judging the competition were Clare Museum’s Education and Outreach Officer, Teresa Carmody O’Shea and languages teacher at Rice College, Clodagh Power.

Teresa Carmody O’Shea, Education and Outreach Officer, Clare Museum, said “It is wonderful for Clare Museum, and for the schools in the county, to have been invited to participate in ARTiculation Ireland and we sincerely thank Julia Walshe of Tipperary Museum of Hidden History for extending that invitation. This competition gives students the opportunity to engage in a meaningful way with the Arts and to gain and develop new skills that will benefit them in their future. These very talented students from Rice College have gotten the competition off to a fantastic start for the county and we look forward to extending this opportunity to more secondary schools in County Clare for ARTiculation Ireland 2026.”

The participating students were presented with medals, certificates and vouchers to acknowledge their hard work and the winner, Dylan McGloin, will now go on to represent County Clare at the All-Ireland Final in Limerick in April.
